May 01, 2007 May is LEAVE A LEGACY™ Month

LEAVE A LEGACY™ is a public awareness initiative designed to increase Canadians' understanding of the benefits of gift planning through a will or another gift planning means to the charity or non-profit organization of their choice. The LEAVE A LEGACY™ program spreads the message through a grassroots collaborative effort of local volunteers and partners. Local Committees are supported by the CAGP-ACPDP™ National LEAVE A LEGACY™ Program.

National LEAVE A LEGACY™ Month is an annual celebration of the LEAVE A LEGACY™ message across Canada. Each year, throughout the month of May, local LEAVE A LEGACY™ Committees host educational and promotional events in their communities. Here a few examples of some of the projects both past and present.


LEAVE A LEGACY™ Month - May 2007

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Manitoba

A 28-page LEAVE A LEGACY™ insert was published in the Saturday, April 28th edition of the Winnipeg Free Press. Winnipegers will also be exposed to LEAVE A LEGACY™ through a month-long Winnipeg Transit bus advertisement featured on the side panel of one of the fleet's buses.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Waterloo-Wellington

A half-day symposium took place on May 17 in Cambridge and was designed for planned giving specialists, charities and foundations, insurance professionals, investment advisors and financial planners, accounting professionals, lawyers, retirement counsellors and personal trust officers and managers.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Saskatchewan South

A four-page spread in the Leader Post newspaper was published on May 3. Bus board advertisements and PSA's will be appearing throughout the entire month of May. A LEAVE A LEGACY™ Donor/Client Recognition Luncheon takes place at Government House in Regina on May 30.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Saskatchewan North

In Saskatoon, a LEAVE A LEGACY™ luncheon occured on May 23 at the Saskatoon Golf and Country Club. A six-page LEAVE A LEGACY™ insert appeared in the Star Phoenix newspaper on May 26. A Day with Frank Minton took place on June 19. LEAVE A LEGACY™ Saskatoon is working with www.remembering.ca, the Star Phoenix online obituary service, to bring the LEAVE A LEGACY™ message to its readership. And a new local website was launched the week of May 28 - www.leavealegacysaskatoon.com

Nearby Prince Albert has also been very active. Multi-media advertising on CKBI 900 AM, Power 99 FM & Mix 101 FM as well as CTV (Prince Albert) occur throughout the month. An eight-page supplement was distributed with the Prince Albert Daily Herald and Rural Roots on May 6 & 7. A LEAVE A LEGACY™ lunch staged jointly by local charities and the Chamber of Commerce was held on May 8.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ London

LEAVE A LEGACY™ inserts were placed in two newspapers - London Free Press and The Londoner. A LEAVE A LEGACY™ launch event took place on Wednesday, May 16 at the London Music Club.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Eastern Ontario/Western Quebec

A LEAVE A LEGACY™and Estate Planning insert was featured in the Ottawa Citizen on May 30 and remains online for two weeks at www.ottawacitizen.com.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Nova Scotia

A LEAVE A LEGACY™ 1/4 page ad was featured in the Chronicle Herald and the Capte Breton Post, and an ad was shown on the Eastlink Cable television station. 30 second radio PSAs were also aired around the province during the month of May.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ London

In addition to publishing two special sections in the Londoner and the London Free Press, the local London RoundTable hosted a first-ever "Family and Philanthropy" luncheon featuring a keynote address by a local media celebrity. The event was attended by over fifty participants.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Temiskaming

In addition to publishing their annual insert, the City of Temiskaming Shores designated May as LEAVE A LEGACY™ Month. The committee created radio spots, and one committee member was a featured guest on an open talk show about legacy giving.

UN HÉRITAGE À PARTAGERMD Quebec

In addition to special supplements in major daily newspapers, UN HÉRITAGE À PARTAGERMD Quebec launched their 2006 Directory of Charitable Organizations and published a 12-page supplement in Actualité.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Newfoundland and Labrador

The Newfoundland and Labrador committee recruited a host of new volunteers and developed new local radio spots.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Vancouver Island (Victoria and Nanaimo)

The Vancouver Island program celebrated LEAVE A LEGACY™ Month with their annual "Central Island Library Series", which is a series of planned giving information sessions held at local public library branches throughout Victoria.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ North Saskatchewan

The North Saskatchewan committee worked extensively with local media to promote LEAVE A LEGACY™ Month. Information inserts and articles on planned giving were developed and circulated throughout Saskatoon via local newspapers.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Greater Toronto Area

"A Guide to Charitable Gift Planning", a 28-page supplement in the Globe and Mail, was circulated to 19 000 households in Greater Toronto. A further 16 000 copies were distributed to prospective donors and clients via local charities and professional advisors.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Golden Horseshoe

The LEAVE A LEGACY™ Committee opened its doors to potential donors and professionals with a "Leaders in Legacy Giving" evening. Professional speakers delivered presentations on the "how-to"s of legacy giving for advisors, as well as on how clients can approach the subject with their advisors.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Manitoba

Manitoba highlighted LEAVE A LEGACY™ Month with a 32-page colour insert circulated in the April 29th edition of the Winnipeg Free Press, including artciles about donors and the legacy gifts they have made to Manitoba charities. It was distributed to households and businesses throughout the province and northwestern Ontario. All through May, the committee purchased a side panel advertisement on a Winnipeg Transit Bus, showing the LEAVE A LEGACY™ logo and contact information.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ South Saskatchewan

Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco, Honourary LEAVE A LEGACY™ Chair, and Honourary Donor Jan Hutchings Besse launched LEAVE A LEGACY™ Month. A 19-page supplement was distributed to over 60 000 households across Regina, Moosejaw and rural Saskatchewan. Media interviews, bus shelter ads, television and radio public service announcements all helped to raise the local profile of LEAVE A LEGACY™ Month.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ - Manitoba

During the month of May, LEAVE A LEGACY™ Manitoba published it’s annual newspaper insert in the Winnipeg Free Press. With the support of the Free Press and participating charities, the insert offered 32 pages of information about the LEAVE A LEGACY™ program, and articles about inspiring legacy giving in the community. The insert was delivered throughout the province in the Saturday paper. Through partnership with Winnipeg Transit, LEAVE A LEGACY™ Manitoba was able to secure the back panel of the Community Relations Bus for the month of May. This free opportunity allowed LEAVE A LEGACY™ Manitoba to promote the idea of planned giving to a wide audience throughout Winnipeg.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Temiskaming

During the month of May, LEAVE A LEGACY™ Temiskaming established a local website which you can visit at: http://www.northernontario.ca/leavealegacytemiskaming

  • They were also able to make a presentation in the local “AdVocis” Group. Apart from that, LEAVE A LEGACY™ Temiskaming prepared and distributed a presentation to the local AdVocis group and distributed the brochure through their charitable and professional partners
  • Sponsored radio spot ads on a local radio station, using the ads provided by CAGP*ACPDP™;
  • Prepared and distributed in their local weekly newspaper a 16 page insert entitled "Make a Difference in the Lives that Follow".
  • Ran a contest for a $100 food voucher. While the response was low, the winner checked off that the voucher be donated to a local food bank.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Ottawa

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Ottawa had its first donor awareness event on May 25th in the form of a seminar with four keynote speakers. The event was held at the National Art Centre in Ottawa.

They had the privilege of having a distinguish member of our community, Mrs. Grete Hale talk about what Leaving a legacy meant to her, followed by a presentation from both an accountant, Jeffrey Miller CA, CFE, TEP of the accounting firm Ginsberg, Gluzman, Fage & Levitz and a lawyer, Patrick Murphy, CSA talking about the technical aspects and benefits of incorporating a legacy gift within their estate plan. The final speaker, Louise Diotte, CFP, EPC,(Chair LEAVE A LEGACY™ Ottawa) spoke about the importance of leaving a legacy, how it can make a substantial difference in “Living our best life journey”. How it’s not all about the money but more about the example that we are setting for others who follow. The difference that it can make in the lives that follow in our community.

Approximately 50 people attended from a broad representation of both the donor and the professional community. They also published a LEAVE A LEGACY™ program supplement in The Ottawa Citizen on May 18th, 2005, which combined helpful donor information, and provided local organizations with the opportunity to advertise their program. The committee hopes that next year's supplement will be even greater with the expansion of their LEAVE A LEGACY™ program participation.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Calgary

Spring 2005 Legacy Seminar Series

The May 17 & 18 Spring Legacy Seminar Series was a huge success! Over 600 people attended the workshops, which took place at the Red & White Club. Thanks to invitations extended by many of the participants and the workshop publicity received, 350 people attended on the Tuesday with 250 participants on the Wednesday. The feedback they received from attendees was very positive.

Of the 182 respondents of the survey, the responses were as follows:

  • 41% thought that the Seminars "exceeded" their expectations;
  • 54% thought that the Seminars "met" their expectations; &
  • 5% thought that the Seminars "did not meet" their expectations.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Calgary would like to thank The Calgary Foundation, Executors Checklist, Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), Mustard Seed, Canadian Cancer Society, Developmental Disabilities Resource Centre of Calgary (DDRC), Calgary Health Trust, SAIT, STARS, Edward Jones, Terry Fox Foundation, Education Matters, Calgary Zoo and Woods Homes Foundation for providing door prizes. May Month … LEAVE A LEGACY™ National Campaign

During the week of May 2-7, a LEAVE A LEGACY™ program supplement was distributed in community newspapers. The intent of the supplement was to share information about gift planning and the impact that it has on the community.

On May 30th, the Newfoundland and Labrador RoundTable, hosted an information session at the Glenbrook Lodge, 105 Torbay Rd, St. John’s. Members of CAGP and partners of LEAVE A LEGACY™ Month were invited to attend.

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Waterloo-Wellington hosted an information session followed by a wine and cheese on May 18th, 2004 at RIM Park. The invitation was extended to allied professionals, charities and their boards, donors and prospective donors. The evening was designed to share tips and strategies to help one realize their philanthropic, retirement, and estate planning goals while significantly reducing their taxes. The theme of this event – “You have the choice to make a difference in your community!” drew attention to the concept of keeping tax dollars in one’s community while creating a generous legacy for future generations.

“Making A Difference”

On Wednesday, May 26, 2004 the LEAVE A LEGACY™ Golden Horseshoe Committee of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners invited the public to the annual community celebration: “Making A Difference.” This year local businessman and philanthropist, Hugh Clark, introduced the evening’s special guest, Mr. Hugh Fraser, a man who embodies the principle of doing what you can, where you are, to have a positive and lasting impact. A Citizen of Distinction, Community Champion and former Music Critic of The Hamilton Spectator, Hugh shared his own personal experience – how he has made a difference by investing himself in the lives of young musicians from the local community. Helen DeBoer, Chair of the local Leave A Legacy™ Golden Horseshoe Committee, emphasized: “Whether through the workplace, a favourite charity or an individual donation, most people have given to community charities and not-for-profit organizations at one time or another, in one way or another. People in our community are so generous; they truly make a difference. We want to say thanks, and that is what the celebration is all about.” During the month of May, the local Cogeco TV Network “Keep In Touch” Program featured the LEAVE A LEGACY™ Golden Horseshoe Program throughout the Niagara Region. Guests presented on the program included LEAVE A LEGACY™ Partners, Donor Advisors, Charities, and Donors who have made a planned gift. The network also ran the

LEAVE A LEGACY™ Greater Toronto published a 16-page supplement in the May 6 version of the Globe & Mail GTA version entitled "Your Guide to Charitable Giving & Estate Planning Tips". Brad Offman stated “This was the largest undertaking in our chapter's history and we have been very excited about it.” In addition to this major publication, the LEAVE A LEGACY™ Greater Toronto Area also distributed a beautiful bookmark through the Toronto Public Library system during May/June to promote the LEAVE A LEGACY™ Greater Toronto Area—approximately 2,000 copies were distributed!

Build Your LEAVE A LEGACY™ Program Success
Wednesday April 13, 2005 1:00 - 5:00 pm.

A great LEAVE A LEGACY™ Program Workshop was held again this year at the CAGP-ACPDP™ Annual Conference in Quebec City. The Workshop began with greetings from Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life – Jean-Pierre Beaudet, Regional Director of the Montreal & Quebec Great-West Life Group.

Helen DeBoer, Manager of Gift Planning at the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation and member of the National LLEAVE A LEGACY™ Program Committee began with a snapshot of what the LEAVE A LEGACY™ programs across Canada have done this past year. She did an excellent job providing comparisons of sponsor numbers, fees and activities. Peter Chipman, Chair of the National LEAVE A LEGACY™ Program Committee was pleased to announce the launch of the new LEAVE A LEGACY™ Website http://www.leavealegacy.ca and reviewed the content as well as the new documentation available for LEAVE A LEGACY™ Programs.

Doug Puffer, Chair of the CAGP Quinte RoundTable described the making of the LEAVE A LEGACY™ Workshop held last year in Kingston at Queens University and the success of the satellite transmission to three remote communities aspiring to begin their own LEAVE A LEGACY™ Program. Trevor Clarke, from Sick Kids Foundation in Toronto presented a compelling talk on the Power of Branding! Helen DeBoer then followed up with some new ideas surrounding the branding use of the LEAVE A LEGACY™ logo.

The final session of the Workshop enabled audience participation by providing some RoundTable discussions on various topics such as: Working with the Media, Preparing a Succession Plan, Professional Publications, and Innovative Events that make an Impact. The groups shared their conclusions and it was noted that there was great learning for all! The day ended with a little LEAVE A LEGACY™ Video prepared by the London RoundTable – a wonderful way to close this great Workshop!

A big thank-you goes to Helen DeBoer for chairing this Workshop and for including so many learning opportunities. The attendees walked away with a wealth of new ideas and new information.


The first LEAVE A LEGACY™ Manitoba Workshop and Luncheon was held on Monday, November 29 at the Norwood Hotel, 112 Marion Street , Winnipeg , Manitoba

The workshop began with a LEAVE A LEGACY™ Information Session for Charities and Professional Advisors . An update on changes with the program structure, policies, new support documents and a peak at the new LEAVE A LEGACY™ Website was provided by Diane MacDonald – Executive Director of the CAGP-ACPDP™ and Peter Chipman – Chair, National LEAVE A LEGACY™ Committee.

At 10:30 , a general audience arrived to hear Tim Chimuk, Executive Financial Consultant with Investors Group provide some examples of how the wishes of donors were met through careful planning. Tim described the story of a special donor (Isla Ayre) who had a doll collection which was gifted to a local museum. Isla was in attendance and was recognized at the luncheon.

During the luncheon a LEAVE A LEGACY™ Planned Giving Panel discussion was held accepting many interesting questions from the audience. Panel members were well-prepared professionals from the advisor sector and included …..

An Informal Luncheon was held at noon where greetings were brought to the luncheon from Jan Belanger, Assistant Vice-President, Community Affairs for Great-West Life, London Life , Canada Life. During the luncheon, attendees also heard from two donors who told their unique and touching stories – Jakee Werbuk and Joseph Kellner. Closing remarks were provided by DeWayne Osborn , Chair, CAGP-ACPDP™.

We would like to thank Great-West Life, London Life, Canada Life for their financial support to enable us to hold our first ever LEAVE A LEGACY™ Workshop under this new partnership agreement. And we would like to thank the volunteer team headed up by Tina Alto, Chair of the Leave a Legacy™ Manitoba Steering Commitee, Kerry Ryan , LEAVE A LEGACY™ Coordinator, Diane Paterson , Chair of the CAGP Manitoba RoundTable, and Linda Lindsay, LEAVE A LEGACY™ National Advisory Committee for her perseverance and vision in making this a reality.


SOUTHEASTERN ONTARIO LEAVE A LEGACY™ Workshop

THE LEAVE A LEGACY™ SOUTHEASTERN ONTARIO WORKSHOP Was held on Wednesday, December 15 th , 2004 at the Donald Gordon Centre,

On December 15 th , CAGP-ACPDP™ offered videoconferencing across the country to build the LEAVE A LEGACY™ Program. PARTICIPANTS INCLUDED: general audience from the Kingston/Quinte area, and by videoconference: Temiskaming (ON), Thunder Bay (ON) and Grande Prairie (AB).

The Workshop began with greetings from Great-West Life, London Life, Canada Life - Carolyn Wood , Regional Director, Kingston Resource Centre. A very informative introduction was presented by Guest Speaker and Moderator – Ed Pearce , Associate Director of Development – Planned Giving, Queen’s University. Dr. Pearce’s message surrounded “Why Canadians Give, Who they are, Why the LEAVE A LEGACY™ message is important to donors”. He then shared a story surrounding how a relationship with a donor lead to a series of gifts.

At 10:45 , the presentations from the Panel began. The speakers on the panel included Regina Rosen, Ian Fraser, Bill Gray and Helen DeBoer . Regina Rosen , Chair of the Community Foundation of Greater Kingston told a story about a donor in her community and the impact of the gift. Ian Fraser , President, PlanGiv Consulting Services Inc. spoke about what charities are doing in developing relationships, securing gifts and working with their professional advisors. Bill Gray , Partner, Secura Financial Group Ltd., recounted a story or two about how high net worth donors become involved in legacy giving. Helen DeBoer , Manager of Gift Planning at the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, described how the Golden Horseshoe LEAVE A LEGACY™ Program was struggling until they decided to have a large community event which enabled a substantial growth in their program.

A Question and Answer Session was held to enable participants to ask questions of the Panel. It is important to note that participants in three remote locations were attending by video conference and had the opportunity to ask questions as well. The remote locations are: Temiskaming (ON), Thunder Bay (ON) and Grande Prairie (AB). All three locations are considering starting their own LEAVE A LEGACY™ Program in their areas.

The session ended shortly before the luncheon with Diane MacDonald Executive Director, CAGP-ACPDP™ reviewing the role of the national office, the new documentation available as well as a few clips of the new website. Hazel Lloyst Shaw , Chair of the LEAVE A LEGACY™ Southeastern Ontario and Doug Puffer , Chair of the CAGP™ Quinte RoundTable thanked the speakers and the participants for attending the Workshop.
